Unsurprisingly, dog sledding is not a recent invention although dog sledding holidays are! There is some archaeological evidence to suggest that indigenous peoples may have used dogs in the artic regions of the world as far back as 4000-5000 years, and possibly longer. Of course, there is no written history of the purposes the dogs were used for, but it might be relatively safe to speculate that hauling loads, including people, over the snowy landscape might well have been one such.
What is clear is that by the 19th century, dogs hauling sleds were becoming increasingly commonplace as Europeans spread into areas once either uninhabited or the exclusive lands of groups such as the Inuit. Inevitably, theres some dispute about who started what and where, but it is certain that organised dog sledding races go back to at least the 1850s. Even today, the practice is still extensively used in many of the frozen landscapes of the planet, as they may be more practical and environmentally friendly than mechanical alternatives.
What does a holiday like this involve?
That depends on what you select. Options exist in places such as Sweden or Canada for example; some might be just a few days duration based upon excursions from a central lodge base, while others might be a little more demanding, perhaps involving longer cross-country journeys and expeditions.
The question remains though, would you enjoy dog sledding holidays? To know that for certain you'll need to enjoy the outdoor life, fresh air and, yes of course, snow! Youll also need to be willing to learn about and have a basic liking for dogs, plus the confidence to exercise control over them. You certainly dont need to be especially fit, though having good basic mobility is a must.
Many of these kinds of holidays are based around the assumption that you have no experience whatsoever and training is given upon arrival including an introduction to your dog team. You won't be involved in extreme survivalist-type activities with rudimentary accommodation and food. Whatever country youre in, accommodation will be of excellent standard as will the food. This isnt an attempt to re-create 19th century explorers hardships!
