Do the dogs sense differently compared to humans
? The answer is both yes and no. Dogs and humans share the same basic senses such as smell, touch, hear, see, and taste. But, the levels of these senses are different.Sight: In the early days it was though that the dogs were color-blind. It was believed that they could only see black, white and grey but scientific studies later proved that this is not true. Dogs can see various colors like red, green, crme and black and white as well. It has been found out that humans can distinguish around 7 to 10 million colors of which we dont even know the names of many.
Dogs have a great sense of detection and this is the reason why a dog can see the cat up a tree which is at a greater distance than a man can do. The night vision of the dogs is much better compared to the humans. The dogs have an additional reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum which reflects the light back to the receptor cells in the eye and this helps in increasing the night vision and this is the reason why their eyes glow in the dark and gives a spooky appearance.
Hearing: When we hear a dog barking crazily in the middle of the night it is generally assumed that he is feeling lonely and wants someone to keep his company. But the truth would be that he heard something that a human did not hear and this is upsetting him. It may be a thief who broke into your basement.
Dogs can hear a distance of four times more than a human being. The dog can hear something from a quarter of a mile distance. Dogs have 15 muscles that enable to move the ear is different directions and gather information from all sides.
Touch: The sense of touch in dogs is also well-developed. Though under all the fur it is not as sophisticated as in the humans they do have the sense of touch. The new born puppies have sensory receptors on their faces and this enables them to identify their mother even before they open their eyes. They have the sense of touch all over their body too and this is the reason they try to snuggle next to you on the sofa.
Smell: Human beings can come nowhere to the dogs ability to smell things. It has been found out that the ability of the dogs sense of smell is a lac times more than that of the human beings. The number of olfactory nerves in a human being is 40 million and in the dog there are 2 billion olfactory nerves. This is the reason why dogs are excellent trackers and they can track any smell without getting distracted.
The sense of smell in the dogs is also their communication tools. So, when you see them running in the park next time with their nose in the ground then it should be understood as it is the calling card of the dogs to the other dogs, cats, squirrels etc. He wants to know if any of his friends are there in the park.
Taste: Taste is closely linked to the sense of smell just as it is in the humans. The major difference is that while humans do not eat anything that smells bad for the dogs it is the smellier the better.
Humans also dont eat anything that does not look appealing but it does not matter for the dogs. They dont chew or taste but simply gulp down the food.
So, next time when you see the dog barking madly or following something rather than getting irritated identify it as the dog responding to some other sense and it trying to tell you something as well.
