Dog Care 101 Choosing A Bed

Picking out a bed for a pet dog is something dog owners dont really think through

. Many owners think that dogs can just sleep anywhere on the floor. However, giving them a specific place to rest is actually one way to help keep them obedient and it also gives them a small, personal place that they can call their own. Most pet shops offer a wide variety of dog beds, and there are also alternatives for people who cant find a dog bed thats fit for their four legged friend. Below are a few things to consider when picking out a bed for your dog.

Price

A lot of people would think twice about buying a dog bed that cost hundreds of dollars. But if you are the type of person who wants to spoil their dog with expensive furniture and accessories, then feel free to do so. There are a lot of stores that offer affordable god beds and pillows, so try to check a few pet shops before getting one. An inexpensive option would be to buy floor puddings and a big pillow where your dog can lounge in.

Shape

Depending on how big the dog is, the beds shape is an important concern. Bigger dogs dont really do well with beds that have boarders around the edges, however, little dogs will have a nice time curling up to these. Beds with edges are also not good for dogs that have degenerative myelopathy since the edges might make it hard for them to get in and out of the bed. Make sure the bed lays flat on the floor. Something that rocks is not really a good bed for dogs.

Size

The bigger the dog, the bigger the bed. You would not want to get a Great Dane a bed that can only fit a Chihuahua. For bigger dogs, its advisable to get something thats a bit bigger than their body and match it with a nice soft pillow that they can rest on. Moreover, dogs with degenerative myelopathy will need something bigger to lie on so that they can still move around. For smaller dogs, they are pretty happy on a nice, soft and cozy bed.

Design and Material

This is where dog owners can get really creative. Choose a design that fits your personality. Its best to get a color thats a bit darker since stains and dirt is less obvious. Also, choose a bed thats made out of materials which are easy to clean.
