In order for you and your children to stay safe online
, you have to understand the threats that are out there and what you need to do to keep it away. Keeping your children out of harms way is doing more than just telling them once that they should not talk to strangers on the Internet. That is just not enough to make them understand the seriousness of being careless with their online activities.There are too many incidents of online bullying (cyberbullying), teasing, spreading rumors, posting unsafe or inappropriate photos, harrassment, stalking and many other terrible acts that take place online every single day. Our children can not possibly understand the magnitude of such dealings if we do not help them learn about them. With so much danger on the Internet, it is important that children know how to stay safe online, whether they are chatting with friends or socializing on social networks.
One of the best things you can do as a parent is to regulate your childs time that is spent on the Internet. Do not put the computer in their bedroom and give them free reign to surf the Web for six hours every day after school unsupervised. Keep the computer in a central location in the house so that people are passing by at regular intervals, keeping the screen within plain view. This is going to really limit a childs ability to keep screens secret. Make sure that your children understand why you will not let them have free reign of the computer. Children by nature are of course always curious, so if you tell them to do something (or not to do something) but they do not understand why, the chances of them listening to you are cut down pretty drastically.
You have to know who their friends are when they are talking to them on the phone or they ask to go over to someone elses house, right? The same rule should always apply to their online friends too. Keep a mental note of the people they tell you about, and make sure that you either know their friends or they know them from school. They should never have anyone on their friends list that they do not personally know.
In addition, they should never give anyone their password to any of their accounts, and this includes their friends. Parents were kids not too long ago too, and we know how other children operate and how persuasive peer pressure can be. To stay safe online, your child should never allow anyone to have access to their accounts. Once again, you have to explain to them the reasons for this. Simply telling them that someone else could get into their account is not going to be enough.
Their reaction to that is going to be, So what? You have to tell them that someone could use their account to start a rumor about someone else, which could cause that person to do one of two things: they could either fall prey to teasing and bullying, or they could become angry and come after your child, obviously thinking that it was your child who started the rumor. This is only one example of the terrible things that could happen if your child does not understand how to stay safe online.
