Divorce counselling expert says hard economic times may be good for marriage

Adivorce counselling professional from the New Horizons life-coaching firm says that the recession might have prevented at risk' marriages from completely collapsing, as many couples have stuck together through the difficult economic times.

Sue Terry's claim is corroborated by hard evidence from the American Academy of Matrimonial lawyers, which has recently announced that divorce rates have plummeted by a massive forty per cent since the beginning of the world economic crisis.

The New York Times is one newspaper dubbing the phenomenon: Sleeping with the enemy', but this analysis of the situation may be unfairly cynical, according to some.

Divorce counselling guru Sue said that most couples having problems during the tough times had shown great character by sticking together, even if the trigger factor was money.

Sue said: "As a person who provides divorce counselling you often see people who are extremely unhappy and feel that even the process of attempting to work out differences in a relationship seems pointless.

"However, as we know, money is huge driver of human behaviour and if couples whose relationships are at risk attempt to tough it out through the difficult economic times for the greater good, then that can only be good for the institution of marriage."

"Divorce counselling professionals will tell you that having a shared interest like survival can have the effect of bringing together people who have drifted apart; actually making their relationship stronger in the long-term." She added.

It remains to be seen if there will be a flood of divorce applications proceeding through the family courts once the bad economic times are over and a recovery takes hold.

But the world's divorce counselling providers might just have to concentrate on marriage counselling for now, as the signs of recovery are only beginning to show.
