Weight Watchers, one of the most popular weight loss programs since its launch in 1995, is transforming its approachto dieting.

The new program, the ProPoints Plan, is based off of scientific discoveries about the body's ability to process food.

While the old system centered on calarie consumption, the new ProPoints plan focuses on how quickly the body processes nutrients and which healthy foods satisfy hunger for longer periods of time.

The popularity behind the previous Weight Watchers program stems from the simplicity behind it's point-system approach; dieters are allowed to consume a specific number of "points" per day with each food correlating to a certain number of points. For example, a steak burger and a scoop of ice cream may have the same number of points.

A dieter may eat which ever he desires as long as he does not consume more than his allotted points per day.

Under the ProPoints plan, dieters can eat more food per day but are encouraged to stick to the healthy foods- proteins, wholemeal breads, fruits and vegetables- that the body burns digesting.

Fruits and vegetables, for example, do not carry any points because of their high levels of fibre. The body burns a lot of energy processing fibre and, in addition, fibre keeps us feeling satisfied for longer.

Consider two breakfasts, both 300 calaries. The first is an english muffin with butter and jam, which equates to 9 ProPoints. The second is a much larger cooked breakfast- a slice of wholemeal toast with low-fat spread, a poached egg, two pieces of grilled bacon and a small side of ketchup. This breakfast carries 8 ProPoints. (A common female dieter gets 29 ProPoints per day.)

With new research, dieters are now encouraged to eat the second breakfast because the body will be digesting protein, which takes much longer, as opposed to carbohydrates.

"The 300 calaries in the cooked breakfast come predominantly from protein, whereas the 300 in the enlgish muffin come from carbohydrates which are not rich in fibre," explains Weight Watchers dietician Zoe Hellman.

"As it takes the body more energy to process and digest protein, this is lower in ProPoints value. In addition, the cooked breakfast will keep you feeling full for much longer."

The body burns up to 25% more energy digesting proteins and fibre than sugars and fats.

The ProPoints method has already been tested o hundreds of thousands of women worldwide. Most people lose 8 to 10 pounds in the first month.

The shift away from calarie intake to bodily processing is a new element to weight-loss programs and a helpful tool to overcoming obesity.

"We realized we needed to design a weight-loss plan which allowed more room for real life," states Ms. Hellman.
