, one who will make you happy for the rest of your life, or the one that you just can't live without? Marriage may be old-fashioned, but it is still a great way to ask a person to never leave you. There's the old cliche "Diamonds are a girl's best friend," but it may be more truly said that diamonds are a guy's best friend. The proposal has to be perfect, the food, the atmosphere, the timing, but even a botched proposal can be overcome by the perfect ring.There is no simple equation to picking the perfect ring. If you're looking to get married, hopefully you know the girl you are asking very well, or at least well enough to know what kind of ring she likes, but you may want to subtly find out what kind of diamond she likes. Talk to her girlfriends, leave a bridal magazine around and see what pages she looks at, those are just some ways to find out what she likes. Magazines will show full rings, though, so you might want to include a few brochures from loose diamondcompanies, and see which cut she circles or touches. Round and Pear, Heart and Emerald are pretty easy, common shapes; Oval and Marquise are very similar in shape, but a Marquise is a much thinner oval. Baguette is a rectangle, but Princess is square, and Trillion is a triangle.
Be careful, though, do this too openly, and she may figure out your surprise before you do.
So, once you find the right ring and figured out her favorite diamond, time to visit some of those places you have brochures for. A lot of jewelry stores have a pretty selection of loose diamonds, but the store with the right ring may not have the right diamond. Don't be afraid to shop around, find a dealer who's willing to explain the ratings for clarity and color, and examine each diamond under a bright light, check it's sparkle for yourself.
So, once you've done all that work, it's time to pop the question. Make your plans, pick a place or activity that's special for both you and her, and be your most special, charming self. Be willing to roll with whatever life throws, because an angry proposal never goes well. But when it's all said and done, you get down on one knee or however your girl likes it, make sure you show off that sparkle. It'll blind her to the faults and problems and help her say yes.
