Developing Parenting Skill
As a parent, with main responsibility for a child
, you need a raft of skills such as love, patience, open-mindedness and understanding. You also need to know when it would be better for the development of your child for you to be bit a little tough on them.
Some people are just naturals when it comes to parenting. Most parents learn parenting skills from their parents by the way their parents raised them. Whether right or wrong that is who most of us learn from. If someone feels like they are lacking in parenting skills, there are plenty of books, web sites, and people that can help you.
There are people who naturally find it pretty easy to be a parent. Most of us pretty much copy the way our parents parented us. Their parenting may have had its own faults but we are familiar with it and we tend to emulate it. If you feel your parenting skill needs a bit of a boost, you can take a look at the many books and websites which there are on the subject.
It's not quite accurate to call it parenting 'skill'. It is more a way of life or a parenting style. The easiest, most relaxed way to find yourself a parent is if you planned the whole thing. That will allow you to approach parenting with the right mentality. In preparing for your happy event, you should try to develop the skills you need to ensure your child is healthy and to know when that is no the case. Parenting classes will help you learn how to deal with a whole host of situations that you may not have expected to find yourself in as a parent. Often you will learn parenting skills that will carry you from your child's babyhood to their teenage years, and you can go to parenting classes for specific age groups or to learn a specific parenting skill. However, most people do quite well without parenting classes.
Sometimes being a parent means you have to be tough. At times you have to be tender and understanding. You will know when those times are as a parent. Your child will develop their own personality, some children are strong willed, others shy, and others can be unruly. This is where the skill comes in. As a parent you need to know how to deal with your type of child.
Sometimes being a parent means being tough. Other times you will need to be softer and more understanding. Working out which of those you need to be is all part of being a parent. You will find your child developing their individual personality; perhaps they will be strong-willed and unruly, perhaps they will be shy. That is where your parenting skill comes in as you work out how to deal with the particular child that you have.
Parenting skills are not always known up front, but learned as you go. You have many sources including your own child to learn from. Your child's actions and interactions with you will let you know if your skills are good.
Don't worry if you don't feel you have these parenting skills to begin with. You can develop these as you go along. There are many ways you can lean these parenting skills, as well as through learning from your own child(ren). Just from the way your child reacts you will know whether you are dealing with them in the right way. If you are unsure about what to do in a given situation, there are places that you can find out information.
There are classes that teach parenting skills, you can find out where they are held by looking in the local phone book, or on the Internet for child care education classes. There are books that address the issues of parenting. Do your research and decide what is best for you.
