Dentist Dallas TX Why is Deep Brushing of Teeth Important

Many of us, despite maintaining good oral hygiene, end up with plaque, tartar and calculus around the teeth. Such areas in the mouth, like crevices, inter-dental spaces, where it is not possible to completely brush and clean with the help of the bristles of a toothbrush are many. That is why every six months you should make it a point of visiting the dentist. We end up getting gum diseases and periodontal diseases if we delay this visit endlessly.

The first step that the periodontist will take is advise you to go in for deep cleaning of teeth before treating such conditions. A periodontist or dental hygienist performs this procedure and for those people that have very bad oral hygiene, it is very important.

Periodontal refers to the area of the gum that surrounds the tooth and holds it in place. When bacteria get trapped in the periodontal pocket between the tooth and gum, the gum weakens and the bone is left vulnerable to decay, according to the American Dental Association. This can result in the loss of teeth, if left untreated.

Scaling and root planing is the initial and primary treatment of periodontal disease also known as deep cleaning. Plaque and tartar being scraped off from the teeth above and below the gum surface is what is entailed in scraping. The smoothing of rough layers of the teeth is what is root planning and it is done at the same time as scaling. In concert, both procedures work to facilitate healing of the periodontal pockets by removing harmful bacteria and shutting down areas where such bacteria can grow.

To allow the gums and other tissues in the mouth to heal, deep cleanings are needed. They also reduce the need for more drastic procedures by halting and sometimes reversing the damages caused by gum disease. When there are deep pockets along the tooth roots due to bone recession it is impossible for the patient to properly clean and keep the gum tissue free of inflammation. To remove the inflammation and debris which would sometimes be done prior to gum surgery, a deep cleaning is necessary.

The healing of the mouth still needs to happen after planing or scaling. Sensitivity to hot and cold by the teeth may be there for a while. The bleeding and swelling of the gums may remain until the tissue has time to fully repair itself.Once it has healed, it can begin adhering to the teeth again. With a clean area below the gums and a tighter seal at the gum line, bacteria will not cause damage as effectively. However, proper oral hygiene is still imperative to keep the condition from developing again.

An oral anti-microbial rinse may also be prescribed to further neutralize the bacteria and promote healing. Quarterly or semiannual visits to the dentist can be used to control the disease if the depths of the pockets reduce or stabilize as a result of the treatment.

For possible surgery with the objective of getting a deeper scaling underneath the gums, the dentist may refer the patient to a periodontist if the treatment is less successful. Periodontal deep cleaning can be uncomfortable for the 30 minutes to an hour the patient is in the dentist's chair, but it is worth it in the long run to retain a smile.
