Suddenly, you feel isolated and often even depressed about losing your child to a college education. To help you cope with it, here are some things you can do.Spend Time with Others
If you are married, you can reduce the loneliness of an empty nest by spending more time with your partner. This is the time to rekindle your intimacy and concentrate on your relationship. For the past eighteen years, your whole world revolved around taking care of your children. Now is the time to bring back your attention to your marital relationship. Renew your vows to each other to help you easily cope up with the separation from your child. If you are a single parent, you can spend your extra time with your friends. Go out and enjoy the company of your pals and open your doors to socialization.

Instead of calling your children every hour and checking on them, you can fill your free time by adopting a new hobby. Instead of dwelling on the emptiness due to the separation, use the spare time to be productive. The extra money you generate can even help sustain your child's expenses in college.

Another way to fill your home is to participate in student exchange programs. By giving a home to a foreign student, you can reduce the loneliness and depression associated with the separation from your child. You can even help other children cope up with the sudden change in their environment.
Keep the Line of Communication Open
You can reduce the effects of the empty nest syndrome by talking to your children or visiting them during school holidays. Keep in mind that even when they are getting more independent, they still need your love, care and guidance.
