Dealing With Stress - Are These Quack Treatments Hurting You?

Nowadays, there is an abundance of various stress relief methods and anxiety alleviation

techniques promoted by hundreds of alleged stress & anxiety specialists, sufferers find it very hard to work out who offers the best solutions. As an ex-chronic sufferer myself, I know when someone who claims to be an expert in dealing with stress is actually anything but. It is vitally important to avoid techniques that actually prolong your suffering and here are three must avoid commonly promoted stress relief techniques so you don't waste your valuable time and money on snake oil.

1. Eating habits and nourishment. Anyone who asserts that stressful illnesses are:

Triggered by bad eating habits and inadequate nourishment or:

Can be relieved by improving diet and nutrition

Does not possess a basic understanding of these serious problems and is pulling the wool over your eyes. No doubt about it.

All it takes is a little question to work out why:

Would it be true to state that each person who is stressed, anxious or depressed consumes the wrong foods and moreover, will all people whose eating habits are poor end up suffering from a stressful illness?

I've eaten the very healthy Mediterranean diet for the last fifteen years and for five of them, anxiety and depression made my life hell. It is clear that these problems certainly weren't triggered by my diet nor did the foods I was eating do anything at all to help me conquer stress, depression and anxiety.

2. Stand-up tall and taking deep breaths. If you've suffered from stress, anxiety and depression you'll know one thing: When you're feeling as though your world is falling apart, that you cannot cope with even the smallest problem, and that there are no solutions to your problems, walking tall and breathing deep are so insignificant it beggars belief. How any "specialist" or counselor or therapist can recommend this nonsense as "proven stress management techniques" is completely baffling.

Look. At those times when you feel so frightened and out of control your hands happen to be shaking like leaves and sleep evades you no matter how dog-tired you are, you can improve your posture and try breathing deeply all day long but neither of them will help you to relieve stress and anxiety. That's because the root cause of these problems is not being addressed and that is the key factor in dealing with stress, anxiety and depression successfully.

If someone is advising you to do these, do not listen, it is absolute nonsense. Avoid these so-called "specialists" and don't waste time and money on them whatever you do.

3. Beware Isolation. To finish, one more "proven" stress management method you're bound to come across that will not work for you and may actually exacerbate stress and anxiety. Have you ever come across this:

Identify circumstances that cause stress and stay clear of them.

Great idea! Shut yourself away from the world because the root cause of stressful illnesses lies in events and circumstances. Shying away from life is no answer to stress, anxiety and depression, indeed, wanting to be alone is a common symptom of them. Advising sufferers to avoid circumstances, situations and people because they cause stress can cause them to become isolated and this will make stress and anxiety worse to the point that depression sets in.

Shying away from people and situations does nothing to tackle what is at the root of stress and anxiety and indeed, no event by itself can cause these problems to arise. Anyone who claims they do simply does not understand stress, anxiety and depression probably because they haven't experienced them. Don't pay attention to them, they will fail you for sure.

Staying away from stress management methods that will fail you will be a big help in relieving stress as you can apply better techniques that address the root cause instead. Use your knowledge.
