If you are dating someone who has children and you don't have children you may be in for a few surprises
. You may think that you have found the love of your life and then you meet THE children. Depending on your age, you may be dealing with teenagers or you may be dealing with a five year old who thinks you stole his daddy from his mommy. Either way, there will be some things that you need to be prepared for.Relationships are difficult enough but when you throw kids into the mix, it becomes much more complicated. You will have to learn to share your lover with his children and his ex-wife too. There is no way to separate this and you wouldn't really want to, so you will need to learn how to deal with it as best as you can. How you handle this can make or break the relationship, if you decide that you still want a relationship.
The first thing to remember is to not expect too much too fast. Give his children time to warm up to you they may still be healing from a painful divorce. It may take them a while to realize that you did not break up their parents marriage. Be nice to them, even if they are not nice to you but don't push it. If they are openly rude to you, your date should speak to them about their behavior if he doesn't you need to talk about it and give him a chance to speak to them alone.
Another thing to remember, when you are dating someone with children and you don't have children, is to realize that they may need time alone as a family, without you. If this is a long term relationship, they will have to learn to accept you as family but if you have only been dating a short while, let them have some family time. They will learn to like you and perhaps love you if you give them a chance.
When you date someone with children, plan to spend some of your dates at football practice and make no plans for the night of the games. You would want to be there if your children were playing so you can expect him to feel that way too. If you are really serious about this person, you should appreciate that he is a good father since you could have a child with this person too.
You can have a successful relationship with someone who has children, you will just have to work harder at it. Like most things in life that are hard the end results are worth it.
