History or Legend of Diwali
The most famous legend associated with the story of Diwali is the return of Lord Ram to his Kingdom Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, in which he put an end to the demon Ravana of Lanka. In Ayodhya, the people welcomed Rama, Sita and Laxman by decorating their houses and the city by lighting rows of clay lamps, exchanged sweets and ignited fire crackers. So, it is an occasion in honor of Rama's victory over Ravana; of Truth's victory over Evil or the victory of lights over darkness.
