D&C and Hysterectomy by:James Pendergraft

There are unfortunate times in a woman's life when she might experience reproductive problems

. Examples of these are miscarriage and abnormal uterine bleeding. This may bring about depression, sadness and confusion. This is because not only could she be dealing with the loss of the child she is carrying or a frightening medical issue, she will also have to make a decision on the possible medical procedure that she may need.

Options to Counter Reproductive Problems

Presently, women experiencing this dilemma would be asked to consider two common options and these are the D&C and the hysterectomy. The D&C is the dilation and curettage procedure, which calls for the expansion of the entrance to a woman's uterus so that a sharp instrument can be inserted inside. This instrument will be used to scrape or suction the uterus lining so tissue samples can be taken. Meanwhile, hysterectomy is an in-patient procedure that calls for the removal of one or more reproductive organs like the uterus, the ovaries, the cervix, or the fallopian tubes.

Today, D&C is an option given for reproductive problems because it is meant to be safe and routine. However, there was a time when this option was not available for reproductive problems. Instead, hysterectomy and many other major operations were given as the end all to most reproductive problems.

The D&C procedure

A D&C is not done often as a single operation. Usually, it is performed as an add-on procedure to polypectomy or hysteroscopy. This is usually done for the following conditions:

* Severe bleeding. This is usually bleeding experienced after menopause or bleeding that comes with heavy and long periods.

* Irregular bleeding. This refers to irregular bleeding experienced from time to time, which includes vaginal spotting in between menstrual periods

However, your physician might avoid doing a D&C, if necessary, for the following conditions:

* Blood clotting disorders

* Pelvic infections

* Serious medical problems like lung and heart diseases which can make the administration of local or general anesthesia quite risky

D&C Recovery Process and Side Effects

Second is you must also learn about the recovery process for a D&C, which may include side effects from the anesthesia like nausea. It might also induce cramping, irregular periods or bleeding before your next menstrual cycle. The use of douches and tampons as well as sexual intercourse should not be done within a week after the operation.

Ins and Outs of Hysterectomy

Aside from knowing which reproductive organs are to be removed and what particular hysterectomy procedure it is called, you should also know if you have a condition that is an elective or life-saving reason for the procedure.

Of course, you also have to look into the recovery time of hysterectomy, which could take from four to eight weeks. Even a laproscopic or vaginal hysterectomy needs one to two weeks for recovery.

After learning all these, the last thing that you must do is to compare both D&C and hysterectomy. Be aware that while the two procedures are known to address female problems, a D&C involves lesser amount of time for its recovery period and is not that invasive. However, the usefulness of D&C is only for problems that are not as severe as most of the cases that only a hysterectomy could address.
