Culture, Lifestyle, And Religious Sites In Mumbai

Mumbai enchants ceaselessly. Be it, the famous touristy places to visit in Mumbai such as Shivaji Park, Kanheri Caves and Gateway of India, the heart thudding nightlife, soul-stirring religious sites, or the lip smacking cuisines dished out in the citys numerous legendary restaurants, this destination makes for a whirlwind tour of non stop entertainment and fun. Being a cosmopolitan melting pot of diversified cultures predominated by a Maharashtrian way of life, Mumbai is also marked by a colourful religious, social and cultural identity. These factors also play a major role in boosting Mumbai tourism besides their effect on the citys social fabric. Here is a snapshot of the Mumbais culture and lifestyle and some of the most well-known religious sites.

The Culture & Lifestyle

Although, the culture & lifestyle in Mumbai has largely been influenced by a Maharashtrian legacy, it is also true that the city is the states most cosmopolitan one, where people from all over the country have settled down. This has made Mumbai a lively colourful hodge podge of communities as diverse as Parsis, Muslims, Christians, Sindhis, Bengalis, and Punjabis. If chants of Ganapati Bappa Moriya rend the air during Ganesh Chaturthi, the entire city is decked up and gears up for fun and frolic during the festive times of Christmas, Diwali, and Holi. People from all walks of life such as Koli fishermen and other humble folk living in slums, middle class chawl dwellers, and corporate honchos and film stars, have been warmly welcomed by this city of dreams. People watch Marathi flicks and Bollywood blockbusters with equal aplomb. Visitors longing for a cultural experience in the city would do well to check out theatres and art galleries such as Prithvi Theatre, Dinanath Natyagruha, Prabhodankar Thackeray Theatre, Jehangir Art Gallery, and The Asiatic Society of Bombay.

A Religious Tour of Mumbai

Some of the most popular religious sites in Mumbai include Siddhivinayak Temple, Haji Ali Dargah, and Mount Mary Church. The Siddhivinayak Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesh, is spectacular structure with six storeys and a golden peak. The temple dates back to the dawn of the 19th century and also has a lake in its premises. The Haji Ali Dargah is the site of a mosque as well as the tomb of Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. It was built in the early 15th century and the nearly kilometre long path leading to the dargah is submerged under water at high tide. There are no railings on the sides of the path. The Mount Mary Church or Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount is a Roman Catholic church located atop a hillock in Bandra. The statue of Our Lady alone has a rich history. It was brought here in the 16th century by Jesuit priests. The right hand of the statue is missing as it was sawed off by Arab pirates for the gilt-edged artefacts held by it.
