Creating A Boy Pirate Costume For Halloween

If girls like to be princesses, boys are all over pirates

. They love to swing their swords and pretend to sail to the far ends of the earth. That means a boy pirate costume made at home will be a real treat for anyone who loves the high seas.

There's nothing too complicated about a pirate outfit. Start with baggy pants. Kids can use adult shorts with the drawstrings in the legs to turn them into short pants. This gives the balloon look to the pirate pants, which can be any color, really.

The shirt for a pirate is also simple. A large white one with the sleeves folded back is ideal. Tuck in the bottom half and then hold everything together with a big belt. This helps complete the look!

You can also use belts to hold a sword! Every pirate needs a weapon, so make sure yours is outfitted with a pistol or two or a sword to defend himself with. These are usually available in most toy stores or you can find them online. Kids can also come up with their own weapon ideas, they usually have excellent imaginations.

The traditional hat for a pirate is black and a tri-corn. This means you'll probably have to buy it if you aren't a hatter yourself. These can be found in costume shops, as well as some toy stores. This is essential for the uniform of a pirate, so finding one is a must.

Your pirate will also require boots, preferably black or brown and fairly high. These are actually best found in second hand stores. They can work very well for outdoor pirates.

Next, the finishing bits of the costume. A nice sash is perfect for some, but is completely optional. This should be red and tied around the waist. The vest is another usual addition to the whole outfit.

Most pirates seem to require eye patches and beards. The patch can be made with elastic cord and cardboard, while the beard or stubble may be drawn on with an eyebrow pencil. Get creative!

A little boy pirate costume doesn't have to be terribly elaborate. Whether for Halloween or just fun playtime, this can be a great way to help your little one disguise himself.
