Create A Magical Christmas In Rome

One of the most important things that you need to arrange is your holiday lodging

. Hotels can get very booked up for the holidays and often significantly increase their rates which may make the trip out of your budget. However, do not despair because there just might be something that will fit into your budget. Vacation apartments can be a great option for you to take advantage of. Vacation apartments are often more affordable than a hotel room, especially during the holidays. Additionally, a vacation apartment will have a kitchen in it and that can help you save some money by allowing you to cook some of your own meals. Finally, you are able to sleep more people in a vacation apartment than you would be able to in a traditional hotel.

Once you have your lodging squared away you can start the real fun by planning your activities. If you are traveling to Rome for Christmas you must plan a stop at the Christmas market. This is located in the Piazza Navona. Here you will find many different stalls and shop cards with traditional Italian ornaments and models. To keep the kids busy there are street performers, balloon sellers, and even a carousel!

Rome is also adorned with stunning and large Christmas trees. They are strewn throughout the city at all of the important spots. The city glimmers at night because of the twinkling lights and sparkling ornaments.

Of course you must stop at St. Peter's Basilica to watch the 'presepi' being built. This is the large nativity scene that is put up every year to commemorate the events of Christmas. It is stunning to watch the craftsmen going about creating the beautiful display in time for the Christmas Even church services. Watching it go up is one thing, but you will also want to see it once it has been completely constructed. This nativity scene is truly life sized and it is an Italian tradition. However, be aware that the baby will not be in the nativity until he is placed there during Christmas Eve's midnight mass. Create A Magical Christmas In Rome

Speaking of midnight mass, the mass at St. Peter's Basilica is really an amazing service to take part in. In fact, the Pope celebrates the holiday there as well. However, you need to have a ticket to be inside the Basilica so if you want to attend secure your tickets early. That being said if you have your heart set on seeing the service, but don't have tickets do not despair. There are big screens in St. Peter's Square where you can gather with thousands of others to view the mass.

Finally, you may want to head out of your vacation apartment on Christmas day to make your way down to St. Peter's Square. During the middle of the day the Pope wills step out on to the balcony and bless the people below.
