Cosmetic Surgery For Women: The Top 5 Procedures Chosen By Women Revealed
Whether you call it cosmetic surgery for women or plastic surgery for women - the
numbers of women choosing cosmetic surgery are increasing year on year. But what are they chosing to have done?I am Dr Barry Lycka, a cosmetic dermatologist based in Edmonton.
As background information, when I started doing cosmetic surgery back in the early until the late 1980s, the thing that I saw most was women were getting more and more cosmetic surgery done. Now back then, I did a hundred procedures on women for every one procedure on men. Now, I do one procedure on a man for every 10 procedures I do on women. So we are doing more cosmetic surgery for men, men are catching up, but women are also getting more cosmetic procedures done.
So, if you are wondering what are the most common ones that are being done - here is the top5 cosmetic surgery procedures as chosen by women in 2011 and 2012.
The number one procedure in North America is breast implants.
Breast implants still rate as the number one thing. Now, that probably has a lot to say about our society. Most women value this highly. And if theyre not well endowed, theyd like to be a little bit more well endowed. Now, the one thing you have to realize is that breast implants can cause problems. Some companies have been sued over this, and even last year there was a big problem caused by a French company. What you need to know is that breast implants can cause problems. None of these implants are meant to stay in forever. And so, you must be aware that they have toxic problems associated with them especially if they stay in too long and especially if they rupture. Now, the rupturing can cause a local reaction plus it can cause a systemic reaction. The second most common done procedure in North America is liposuction.
And I tell you, liposuction has been something that Ive done thousands of cases on since I started doing it in the 1980s. My first case that I did was in 1986. And at that time, I swore I'd never do another case because it was done under general anesthesia and there were a lot of complications. Now, there is much, much less complications than we had then but you still must be aware that it's highly dependent on the skill of the doctor. The number three procedure thats done on women is a rhinoplasty.
A rhinoplasty is a nose job and a rhinoplasty helps a lot of people. Now, I dont do surgical rhinoplasties; I do nonsurgical rhinoplasties and we find that we can lift noses, make them look better with various techniques using Botox and fillers with very good results. The number four cosmetic procedure thats done is a blepharoplasty.
A blepharoplasty is an eye lift operation. And as people are living longer, theyre finding that their eyelids make them look tired. They make them look not the way they did a couple of years ago. Women for example find that this is less attractive and less sexy and they certainly want to get their eyes lifted. Now, we do this via a very nice procedure, by a procedure called laser-assisted blepharoplasty, which works out very well.
The last procedure on our top 5 list today is an abdominoplasty which is a tummy tuck procedure.
Abdominoplasties help a lot of people to look better but they are real surgery. They take 6 to 12 weeks to recover from, and more and more people are getting liposuction done with the tightening procedures that I talked about as an alternative, because they are less invasive and involve less downtime for them.
