It's no secret that this recession is hurting nearly everyone, especially those who deal in luxuries, such as elective plastic surgery. An unlikely generation has been helping keep the plastic surgeons in business: the Baby Boomers.
The Baby Boomer generation is now creeping into their 50s and 60s, but they are not yet ready to let go of their youth. Many Boomers are determined to keep their once youthful look, and they are turning to plastic surgery to help them accomplish that goal.
Plastic surgeons are happy to oblige this aging generation. Facelifts, BOTOX Cosmetic, and other surgical and non-surgical procedures are allowing the Baby Boomer generation to sustain slivers of their youth.
The demand for anti-aging plastic surgery has risen in the past few years, despite the recession. Facelifts saw a 44% increase in demand from 2008 to 2009 alone. Baby Boomers are also seeing their plastic surgeons for eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), body contouring procedures like liposuction, and the ubiquitous facial filler. The demand for injectable fillers such as BOTOX Cosmetic and Juvederm more than doubled between 2008 and 2009.
The average age for patients who receive these procedures is right in line with the Baby Boomer generation, too. The average age of a facelift patient is 54; for blepharoplasty it is 52; and for BOTOX Cosmetic and other fillers it is 46.
Chemical peels have also become popular among the Baby Boomers. Chemical peels remove the top layer of skin, revealing the fresh, youthful layer underneath.
Many of the minor plastic surgery treatments, such as facial fillers and skin rejuvenation, are also less expensive. Typically ranging between $400 and $1000, these options are not very expensive for the results they produce. After all, how much is your youth worth?
It is also speculated that Baby Boomers are seeking these procedures not only to look as young as they feel, but to better compete with younger employees in a difficult job environment.
