Three Rivers College, the community college of southeast Missouri, will now offer a full online degree program to students who desire the convenience of taking online courses. Steven Lewis, an instructor at TRCC noticed that many students enrolled at the college took one or two online courses in addition to the classes they attended at the ground school. Online courses are often more convenient and allow students to complete a full course load while managing other activities or a job.
One TRCC student, Cody Holt, who plays baseball at the college, said that the majority of his time during the day is devoted to practicing and games. "It's a lot easier for me to do my online classes whenever I have free time instead of having to go to class [in person]," he said.
The popularity of online courses has grown at TRCC, according to Dr. Wesley Payne, Vice President for Learning. A great interest among current students presents the possibility of recruiting even more students, who would benefit from the advantages of online education. Payne considers it "mainstream to offer" online courses.
Online courses enable students to learn the same material that they would in a traditional classroom. Students develop the same kinds of skills, but have more flexibility about how and where they complete their work. The online program will also help TRCC reach out to students who live beyond of the southeast MO region. Payne said that online courses have increased opportunity for students across the state or "really anywhere in the world."
TRCC is building computer labs in four different locations so that students who do not have a computer or Internet access at home can still take online courses.
