Commercial Truck Insurance: A Guide to Physical Damage Insurance

Commercial truck insurance comes in many forms. There are policies designed to protect everything from damage to others' property to trailers exchanged in interchange agreements.

All commercial trucks are required by law to carry a primary liability policy, as basic truck insurance, whether that policy is provided by the employer or held by an independent owner/operator.

These primary policies, however, do not cover damage to your own truck in the event of an accident. Coverage is extended only to cover the damages sustained by the other party involved. Having just this sort of truck insurance seems fairly impractical, if it's the only coverage you purchase as it is unlikely that you will damage someone else's property without damaging your own.

Because of this, it's always beneficial to add a few policies to your truck insurance portfolio that will actually have your own vehicle and assets covered to the full amount necessary. Here are a few such policies and some other factors to consider for independent drivers.

Independent Owner/Operators and Physical Damage Insurance

If you are working as an independent owner/operator in the trucking industry, you understand the need for complete truck insurance coverage. The assurance that you will not be liable for damage to others' property is a huge plus, but you have to protect yourself as well.

The primary insurance provided by trucking companies likely won't extend to fixing your personal damages. The cost of fixing or replacing your truck may be incredibly high and many independent drivers simply cannot afford such costs.

Your damages will be covered regardless of fault, as well. This type of truck insurance also covers damages to your truck in the event of things like fires, theft, and vandalism when the truck is parked.

Physical damage insurance will keep you on the road with the confidence that in any incident, your truck will be covered.
