Cocoa Butter - Stretch Marks Cure or False Hope in a Jar

?

For years now, everyone from grandmothers to TV talk show hosts have been touting the merits of cocoa butter for its rumored amazing ability to heal stretch marks, and make other expensive creams and surgical treatments (such as Stretch Mark Laser Removal) a thing of the past. The question we are setting out to answer is: Is Cocoa Butter the Stretch Marks Wonder Cure?

First let's look at how stretch marks occur. Stretch marks or Striae Distensae are caused by a rapid stretching of the skin, when the skin stretches out too fast, such as during pregnancy or weight gain, for the collagen inside it (the stuff that keeps skin stretchy and elastic) to keep up. This causes scarring and those trademark silvery lines. Stretch marks occur in the lower layer of skin, known as the dermis, and this is why many Striae treatments don't work, as they fail to penetrate the outer layer, known as the epidermis.

One of the properties of Cocoa Butter is that it has the ability to penetrate that top layer of skin, and get down into the dermis to do it's stuff. But does it really cure stretch marks? The answer is yes and no.

Despite its ability to get down into the dermis and it's moisturising properties, Cocoa Butter does not regenerate or effect production of collagen, the only real way to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. It may have a slight effect after application as it moisturises the skin, but it will not make those ugly marks go away. It may however, due to its amazing moisturising properties, work as a preventative measure, so it might be worth trying if you are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant.

So Cocoa Butter is pretty amazing stuff, but unfortunately it's no wonder cure for Striae scars, but it can be a good weapon in your arsenal for the fight against stretch marks. For best results, use Cocoa Butter in conjunction with a good collagen boosting stretch mark cream, and you may find yourself winning in that battle against those ugly silvery lines.
