Introduced to the world as the Cincinnati Red Stockings and premiering as the first

professional team in 1866, it took three full years before the Red Stockings became a fully professional team. Just a year later in 1870, they won 130 consecutive games before meeting with defeat against the Brooklyn Antics. That same year, many of the best players were uprooted to Boston and took with them the name Boston Red Stockings; known today as the Atlanta Braves. Resultingly, a new Red Stockings team joined the National League. This second team was tossed from the NL at the end of the 1880 season because they violated the rules by renting out the ballpark where they played and served beer to fans.

In a twist of events, the expelled team was one of the founding members of the American Association and is the same franchise to date. With two teams of the same name, confusion arose and the National League team decided to shorten their team name to the Cincinnati Reds. By 1912, the Reds broke in a new steel and concrete ballpark named Redland Field. Just a few years later in 1919, future hall of famer Edd Roush led the way for the Reds to win the World Series. The Great Depression area left bye team bankrupt by 1931 and Redland Field, which had been renamed to Crosley Field, had gone into disrepair.

Crosley brothers Powel Jr. and Lewis invested in the Reds, bringing them out of bankruptcy and into the light of better ball playing. It would not be until the 1960s that the Reds would produce star quality ball players to include the likes of Pete Rose, Tommy Helms, Dave Concepcion, Jim Maloney, Gary Nolan, Hal McRae, Bernie Carbo, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez. During this same time, rules were set in place that prohibited players from having long hair, beards or mustaches. The goal was to give the team a wholesome look during a particular time of turmoil in the country. The next decade the team launched a standard of excellence that earned them the name "The Big Red Machine". With a new 52,000-seat stadium, the Reds topped off 70 of 100 games in the 1970s. The season would be preceded by troubles but the Reds would surface as winners again in the late 1970s.

Great American Ballpark is located at 100 Joe Nuxhall Way in Cincinnati, Ohio and has been the home of the Cincinnati Reds since 2003 when it was first opened. The playing surface is perennial ryegrass and construction costs came in at $290 million dollars for the 42,059 seat facility. One of the noted features of the park is the 35-foot wide break in the stands that is affectionately known as The Gap. A concourse bridges the two sections of stands and provides an excellent view of the downtown skyline as well as the game inside the park. Two smokestacks are erected in right center field to reflect on steamboats that frequented the Ohio River in earlier centuries. A 271 foot, 9 inch scoreboard that is the third largest in MLB gives superlative details. The Crosley Terrace houses bronze statutes that commemorate the Crosley Field era in the team's history.
