The traditional standards like Chutes and Ladders or Candyland might sound like they are just for kids, but they are a fantastic way to bring out the holiday spirit. If old is new and retro is in vogue, there is no better way to say happy holidays than with a traditional game. Holiday games are fun and can bring out the lighter side in everybody. No need for a handheld or 4G application. Just grab a seat, have a snack and transform the guest back to the time when your only worry was who would get to candyland first or if you would land on a chute and slip away. Board games, reading stories, role playing and dinner games all come together to make a creative holiday environment. How about some background music to go with those games.
Holiday music does not have to be mundane and bland background sounds that just permeate the air. Make it work for you. Using silver bells for decorations? How about a cool upbeat version of Sliver Bells to really make those bells ring a ding? Get creative and find a few nice soft tone hand held bells you can ring. Set them in strategic places. Put one in the middle of the candy dish, and then add another next to the guardian angel on the top of the entertainment center. The sky's the limit.
Download and edit your own holiday music library or have one of your tech elves do it all for you. Just tell them what you want. They will have a chance to learn about some traditional stuff and add the new and evolving sounds and beats that are sure to please the most discriminating ears in the bunch.
Natural background sounds are awesome and soothing and work well into the overall theme. Remember this is the holiday so you want people to relax and enjoy their visit to your home. Start the dinner game with a question. For instance ask for the name of the ten most performed' Christmas songs since 1950. Take it to the next level and ask when the earliest was recorded. You really do not need to search far for the answer. At this point just make it a high tech game and challenge your guest to use their hand held device to find the answer. This can be the only time they get to use it during the evening.
Buy some simple basic toys like mini Slinkys or even yoyos. Give the winner one as an incentive for getting the correct answer. You do not have to play the whole song. Make it fun. Just play a piece of a song and that is the base for the game. You can get in about twenty or songs and it can take all night to fill the evening with games, food and music. Each song can become a point of departure unto itself. Music and games blend well together and give you time and space to do what you want to do.
Holiday movies are also great but you might want to use those as a planned event so folks don't get lost in the big screen and do not even notice all of those nice things you created just for them. Keep your guest and family involved and plan the entertainment to reflect what you want them to do or see.
In addition to the games you set out for guests as an activity, just set a few small toys and things around your home that anybody can grab and play. Spinning tops, bendable toys, all of these kinds of things are a neat way to interface with people and have them interface with one another or with the toy or game they are involved with. Puzzles are always nice to entertain the mind and the thinking. Simple crossword puzzles with holiday themes make great games. Pictorial puzzles are nice. A retro game like Simon Says will definitely get their attention. Have a few topics of discussion that center around winter holiday destinations. Skiing is one of the most traditional winter holiday destination. There are also many other destinations. Remember to make use of audio files that tell holiday stories. This is probably the one time of the year where people will sit still long enough to listen to a nice holiday story. Make it cozy and fun.
Go beyond Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer, even though it is a cool song. Talk about the author, Gene Autry. Who? Yes Gene Autry (September 29, 1907 - October 2, 1998). He gained fame as The Singing Cowboy on the radio and television, beginning in the 1930s. Autry was also owner of the Los Angeles/California Angels Major League Baseball team from 1961 to 1997, as well as a television station and several radio stations in southern California. Autry is best known today for his Christmas holiday songs, "Here Comes Santa Claus" (which he wrote), "Frosty the Snowman," and his biggest hit, "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." Play one of his old movies and watch as the entire room is transformed back in time. What can be a better gift than the gift of information? You get history, sports and Christmas all rolled into one with this guy.
Find a few contemporary versions of standard holiday songs. How about Japanese or other foreign language version of silent night. Make a game of trying to figure out who is singing what song. The winner gets a simple door prize, like a gift certificate from a local merchant or a specialty store. You can even get creative and make your own prizes. Overall keep it simple and have a wonderful time.
