Fire safety should always be an important factor to consider when you have children, not just at home but any place where your little one could encounter danger. In the lead up to Christmas the decorations go up and more hazards start to enter your home than would usually be present. We have devised a list of the most common Christmas hazard around your home and how you can easily, quickly and best of all cheaply reduce the risk of spending one of the most important days of the year in A&E with a poorly child.
The Stairs
Stair can be a hazard at any time for children but more so over the festive season when boxes full of decorations get perched upon the steps or Christmas presents are placed on the rungs to be taken upstairs. There are two ways that you can avoid tripping or falling around the stairs, firstly a stair gate at the top of the stairs and a stair gate at the bottom of the stairs will avoid children tripping or falling. Secondly by not placing items on the rungs of the stairs you will cancel out the risk of falling over them.
The Living Room
The most common place to put a Christmas tree, the living room is the hub of the home and a room in which lots of children spend most of the holidays. It is therefore important that you make sure all electrical items including the new addition of fairy lights on the Christmas tree are in good working order, plugged in correctly and out of reach of little hands. For children that are a little older it is a good idea to talk them through the dangers of playing with the Christmas tree lights.
At this time of year it is also rather cold, which means that many households are turning up the heating or resorting to lighting open fires. Whilst this is great for keeping warm it is not so great for little hand that like to touch things. There are a number of child safety products such as fire guards and radiator guards that will stop fires and radiators from burning.
The Kitchen
Christmas dinner is something that many people spend hours preparing and cooking, all of which happens in the kitchen. Hot ovens, pot handles that are begging to be knocked off of the sideboard and cupboards that are full of Christmas food ready to be opened, the kitchen becomes a dangerous playground for a child at this time of year well most times of year but more so at Christmas. You can either child proof your kitchen using a range of child safety products or you can invest in one simple child safety product. A stair gate will attach to the kitchen door and make your kitchen a no go area for your child, this keeps them safe and allows you to get on with the Christmas preparation without worry.
