Christmas Hampers/What they are and how you can give them as a traditional gift

Christmas Hampers/What they are and how you can give them as a traditional gift

English Christmas Hampers seem to stem from the traditional holiday in Great Britain during the Middle Ages called Boxing Day

. Typically, Boxing Day always occurred December 26th, the day after Christmas. Servants were given boxes loaded with gift items by the head of the household. A wicker basket would be filled with items varying from wine and food to chocolate and gifts to show appreciation for a year's worth of servitude.

It is believed that Boxing Day may have come about on December 26, due to the Feast of St. Stephen wherein church "boxes" containing donations for the poor were opened and distributed. Whichever way Boxing Day came about, it spun off the idea of the traditional English Christmas Hampers . As gift giving originality becomes increasingly difficult as the years pass, Xmas Hampers are an excellent idea. Some hampers can be dedicated solely to one item like chocolate, while others would do fine with a mix of food, sweets, and something nice to drink.

These baskets can be given in a variety of sizes and combinations but, also to a variety of people. While tradition held it that these presents were for servants, nowadays they are given to business associates, family, friends, and to those who provided goods and services all year round. One very creative idea for these presents is as a hostess gift. You can purchase them already made or go out on your own and be creative. However you decide this would be one tradition worth passing on.
