There are probably thousands of articles and ideas out there about what kind of gifts to buy at this time of year. My suggestion can actually be useful at whatever time of year a gift might be due. Whether for Christmas, birthday, or simply to say 'I remember you', the gift of a thoughtfully chosen book can rarely be bettered.
While most people might not believe it, the choice of the right book as a gift for someone special is not always so easy. That being said, the thought and effort to get a book which will really be appreciated is extremely worthwhile.
A new title which is as yet unread can be a superb treat, especially when you know that it comes from an author or genre popular with the recipient. For someone closer to you, then a new (or used!) copy of a particular old favourite can be a wonderful personal gift.
I think of the example in the TV sitcom 'Friends'. The appreciation was very obvious when Chandler obtained a copy of 'The Velveteen Rabit' for Joey's then girlfriend, Kathy. I remember this particularly, because it encouraged me to obtain and read this old-fashioned classic.
So you see, just the idea of a great book to read can be a gift in itself.
Over the years, browsing in a book store has been among my real favourite ways to spend time and find great books. Now that we have easy access to Amazon etc., finding the books has become so much easier and time-effective. It will never totally replace the pleasure for me, of being among books and being able to touch them, but I must confess that over the last few years, many more books have been ordered over the internet than have been bought in shops.
The scope and convenience of Amazon in particular makes shopping for Christmas Books a different kind of pleasure.
There is just no reason not to be able to find and obtain a special book for Christmas for those people in your life who will appreciate your thoughts.
