Christmas - A Time To Forget Sensible Ways Of Living?
With Christmas fast approaching it is important to remember that just because we
get a few days off to enjoy this time of the year, this does not mean that all morals, ethics and sensibility should go out of the window.The UK is among Europe's unhealthiest nations and Christmas bingeing does not help these figures. Gorging on festive food is a given for most people, but it is important to remember that you would not consume that much normally. Christmas is a time to enjoy your food and some seasonal treats, but you have to think about the consequences of your actions. Healthy living has increased significance at this time of year, it is not an excuse to eat until you burst, so by all means have fun, but think twice before you eat that twelfth mince pie.
It is easy to throw caution to the wind when you are filled with Christmas spirit, and it is at this time of year that police see an increase in drink-driving. Whether it is a work-do, or just a few quiet drinks with family to put yourself in a festive mood, getting into your car at the end of the night is a dangerous decision. A large number of people who would never consider drink driving at any other time fall foul when faced with the end of year festivities; however, it is simply not acceptable. This year, many police forces across the UK have been given the jurisdiction to take licenses instantly, rather than waiting for a decision from the courts. Just because this time of year promotes frolicking and fun, don't forget the danger you pose to both yourself and others if you decide to get behind the wheel intoxicated. The current legal limit is 35mg of alcohol to 100ml of breath, with a 12 month driving ban if you are found to be even just 1mg over this cutoff point. Why risk it.
Christmas can be a money pit, as we have all experienced at one point or another. Buying for loved ones, both family members and friends, can become very costly, but it is important that you do not live beyond your means. At any other time of year, most of us would save money to buy birthday or anniversary gifts, but it is surprising to consider the number who get into debt over Christmas present shopping. Giving fewer gifts this year does not make you any less adequate; it merely shows that you are sensible with your funds. Many people appreciate thoughtful gifts, so aim for quality not quantity and become a savvy shopper; after all starting the New Year with debts or a large credit card bill is not going to help your finances.
Getting caught up in festivities is easy to do, but throughout the Christmas commotion, remember to secure your property well, as crime levels increase throughout December. Usually when leaving the house, we make sure that a light is on, curtains are drawn and so on, to increase safety. But when we are late for that Christmas meal or need to drop that present off to another family member before they go out, we can forget the basics of home security. At this time of year it is of utmost importance that we protect our properties, as leaving your stash of presents in full view of the world is an open invitation to thieves to take the fruits of your hard earned cash. Take an extra few minutes this year to check that windows are closed, that valuables are hidden and that the front door has been locked properly to avoid a nasty shock when you return to your home.
