Choosing A Cosmetic Dentist For Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the most popular procedures performed by cosmetic dentistry today

. Teeth can become discolored for a wide variety of reasons including diet, smoking, exposure to antibiotics or fluoride and age.

A diet that includes coffee, tea and wine can stain you teeth and consumed over a long enough period of time that is exactly what they do. Add smoking to your daily habit and the result is teeth that are yellowed or brown from nicotine.

Teeth can also be discolored and grayed down due to natural pigmentation or exposure to antibiotics. Early and prolonged exposure to antibiotics such as tetracycline (and also the related antibiotics minocycline and doxycycline) can penetrate early tooth development and leave discoloration that can be solid, ribbons or splotches of color. Teeth can be discolored either yellow-brown or blue-grey as a result of antibiotic exposure.

Even something that is supposed to help prevent cavities like using fluoride can lead to teeth discoloration. Young children with developing teeth who ingest too much fluoride can develop a condition known as fluorosis that leaves teeth with chalky white patches or even stained brown or pitted.

Age can also factor in to make teeth look darker. As the tooth ages the enamel surface wears down and more of the tooth's underlying and darker looking dentin is exposed.

Whatever the reason for discoloration, there are several methods available to whiten teeth. The first method is over the counter bleaching products but these products have been proven to be less effective than bleaching methods available by a dentist and will wear down the tooth's enamel which will lead to discoloration in itself.

It is more expensive to go to a cosmetic dentist but it has proven to be not only more successful but overall safer for consumers to do so. The dentist can whiten your teeth with two different methods. Consumers can either have a custom made bleach kit that they use at home or they can have in office laser and bleaching.

To do a bleach kit at home the dentist will first make a mold of your teeth and then have a dental lab make a customized tray that you use as directed by your dentist at home.

The laser bleach method involves the dentist using a laser on your teeth after an application of bleach has been applied. This is an in procedure that is quite effective at lightening teeth to remove stains. This method is faster than an at home bleach kit and will give amplified results.

The cost to whiten teeth varies by a variety of factors including the dentist, the geographic location and the method used. Most people depending on what type of staining their teeth have will see their teeth whiten by two to five shades after bleaching.
