Chingay Parade A Colourful Festival

Chingay Parade A Colourful Festival

The Chingay Parade is special to the New Year festivities in Penang

, Malaysia and Singapore. The word comes from the Chinese language and means a decorated miniature stage or float. The Chingay parade in Singapore is a very colourful and brilliant sight, where a mixture of cultures provides the entertainment. Both local and international performances take place and tradition plays an important part. They give pleasure to both tourists and Singaporeans alike.

Travellers here will be amazed by the features this event brings and like many of its other festivals; this too takes precedence in Singaporean history. The word Chingay is taken from Hokkien and Mandarin dialects of China. The original Zhuang Yi means art of masquerade. This festival began in 1973 with a small parade in neighbourhoods. Today it has grown to be an Asian spectacle of which Singaporeans are very proud of.

In 2011, the parade will be held on 11th and 12th February. The opening will commence with a fire party including large moving multi-ethnic items and travelling dance competitions. At the grand finale, thousands of the performers will occupy the parade ground holding lighted candles. For the first time an Arts District carnival will also be held where the public can take part.

Two such items will be the Teresa Tang look- A like photo contest and the Chingay paparazzi competition. It was in 1977 that Malays and Indian groups in Singapore began to join these performances. This added to the variety and gave an extra flavour to the parade, taking nothing away from the age- old Chinese lion dancers and stilt walkers who are remarkably popular as they have always been.Chingay Parade A Colourful Festival

Travellers can also partake in any of the above events and bask in a national event, renowned around the world. What is more, Singapore is also famous for its dining and whilst you experience this event, there will be a number of delicious meals for you to savour. You can also visit the many restaurants, fast food outlets, cafes and fine dining restaurants sprinkled around the island.
