Children & Braces: Is it Time & what are My Options?

Children & Braces: Is it Time & what are My Options?

We all know that these days' braces can be super costly

, and that there are a ton of new options that can make the decision process extremely confusing. But, we also know that a gorgeous smile for our children will boost their confidence throughout the tough teenage years and beyond. So, my goal is to try to make this process go more smoothly by providing you with the latest and greatest in the world of braces, and also inform you of the best cost saving options.

Braces costs and options

Traditional braces generally cost around $3,500 to $5,000. This is the cheapest option out there right now. Although they are metal and highly visible, traditional braces are super durable and reliable. You can also get traditional braces with clear brackets so they are less visible, but expect to pay about $500 more for these!

In case your teenager is worried about looking "uncool" in front of their friends and peers you may want to consider other orthodontic options, such as lingual braces or Invisalign. Lingual braces have brackets that actually go behind the teeth. However, these can be a bit more costly ($6,000-$9,000), and can cut up their gums and tongue much more than traditional braces.

Invisalign is a set of clear retainers that gradually shift the teeth. The price for this treatment is a bit lower (starting at just $3,500), and is a lot less painful that traditional races or lingual brackets.

What age should children get braces?

Typically, children or teens should get braces when they are between the ages of 11 to 15 years old. However, if your child has an over or under bite you may want to get them sooner. This is because the jaw is softer and more moldable at a younger age which allows the teeth and jaw too correct easier and faster. The only way to know for sure is to take make an orthopedic appointment for your children when they first start getting their adult teeth!

Why a pediatric dentist is best

In case you didn't know, it's best to take your children that are 15 and under to a pediatric dentist. This is because they have specific qualifications that make them experts, such as years of training and experience, in dealing with the dental needs of youngsters.
