Children With Asthma Can Still Be Active

Children With Asthma Can Still Be Active

There are some well-meaning parents who are under the false impression that children

with asthma can't do things like participate in sports and other activities. Therefore, their children go their entire school years without becoming involved with any athletic teams. This forces them to miss out on several important aspects of life, such as learning to work with teams and the importance of sportsmanship.

Although parents in these positions have valid concerns, they should realize that just because their child has a breathing issue, it doesn't mean that the student should not be allowed to participate in sports. Some may wonder how this can be done. Well, as long as the necessary precautions are taken there should really be no problem.

Imagine if an asthmatic child played basketball, for example. Because this is a sport that requires constant movement, it's important that children who participate in this particular activity do everything they can to keep themselves safe. The first thing that they need to do is have their asthma pump with them and readily available at all times. So, this means that it should be somewhere on the sidelines so they can get it at any time. It could be in their game bag or one of the coaches could hold it for them. It may not be the best idea to give it to parents, because they will be further away from them in the stands. However, if parents insist on holding the pump, they must make sure they are sitting as close to the bench as possible. That way, if their child ever needs it, they can get it to him or her quickly.

Along with the aforementioned example, asthmatic children who participate in sports should also be informed of how important it is for them to pace themselves. Many times, when children are playing in competitive sports activities they aren't always thinking about their health. So, there may be times when they end up pushing themselves harder than they should. This can be a dangerous thing, and it is not to be tolerated, because it can be very dangerous. So, parents should let their children know that it's okay if they feel like they need to stop and take a break. Their health and well being is more important than winning a game.Children With Asthma Can Still Be Active

So, although some children may have asthma, it does not mean that they can never participate in sports activities such as basketball. As long as the necessary precautions are taken, everything should be fine.
