Children. They should come with an instruction manual

How many of us wished our children came with an instruction manual? Why am I the only one raising my hand? Well, now there is such a manual. It's called Mothers Manual and it was written by Mrs. Edna C. Wells. It's about raising children -- even while they are in the womb. In Mothers Manual, Mrs. Wells says child rearing starts at conception (e.g., playing music, talking and reading to the child). With her book,

Mothers Manual, Mrs. Wells unlocks the secrets to raising healthy, happy and successful children. She was raised by her maternal grandmother, and she is the mother of four adult children, one son and three daughters.

Mrs. Wells is currently enrolled in graduate school at Chicago State University where she is studying for a Master's degree in Psychology, and will graduate in May 2011. She also has plans to pursue a Ph.D in psychology, and upon completion, she plans to do volunteer community counseling. Mrs. Wells is remarkable because she recently celebrated her 79th birthday, and although she has been writing songs and poems since she was a teenager, she wrote her first book at age 72. After being in a coma three times, and with the urging of friends, she decided to heed her inner voice and started to write. Now, she is the author of two books, Mothers Manual and Listen and Obey. Mrs. Wells says she is influenced by writers, James Van Praagh and Edgar Cayce, and she loves the writing style of Maya Angelou.

She just finished an internship at Community Mental Health Council, and she also does volunteer work with a church group called Ambassadors of Love. During this time of year, the group packs gift bags for children and people who are shut-ins.

Mrs. Wells says she was further inspired to write Mothers Manual after she observed how some young mothers were treating their children. She goes on to say Mothers Manual was written to help young mothers properly raise their children, and learn that babies are being trained from the time they are conceived. She gives many illustrations of child rearing techniques in Mothers Manual, which are based on her personal experiences. She shared with me an encounter she had on a bus with a young mother recently. A young mother sat next to her and began talking about her 7-year-old daughter, and the problems she was having with her. She asked Mrs. Wells if she had any children, and she told her she did. The young mother then asked for her advice regarding her 7 year old. Mrs. Wells told her to allow the young child to show her what she was interested in, and to allow the child to express herself, within reason. When the young mother got up to get off the bus, she told Mrs. Wells that she should write a book. Within a matter of days, she started that book, and the result is her road map for young parents called Mothers Manual.

I asked Edna how long it took to write Mothers Manual, and she said it took only a few months, and that the most challenging part of writing was actually finding time to write. Once she wrote it, she did not make many changes and she did not work on it everyday. But, when an idea came to her, she would immediately write it down.

For your road map to child rearing, you may purchase Edna C. Wells' books Mothers Manual and Listen and Obey on Amazon.com or at Xlibris.com. Her books have previously been sold at Barnes & Noble and Borders.

Her advice for budding authors out there is to write from the heart, be persistent and never give up.

She is currently working on three new books:

1) Men Appreciate Women;

2) Payday Comes; and

3) Ten Things Every Young Girl Should Know.
