Child Bed Wetting Can Have Repercussions
It's not at all unusual for a five year old child to continue to wet the bed at night
. Even the best potty trained child may wet the bed on occasion. This may cause some parents anxiety as they attempt to deal with the situation and try to get their child to overcome the stigma of being a bed wetter.The first important step is to not create additional undue support for the stigma. Fully 1/5th of all five year children wet the bed regularly. This number decreases by one half each additional year of age with 1/10 of 6 year olds and 1/20th of 7 year olds experiencing what medical professionals refer to as nocturnal enuresis.
Bed wetting takes on a social importance beyond the family setting when the child is going to be sleeping away from home at relatives, sleep-overs, camps, etc. The added stress of parental disapproval or fear of embarrassment and teasing from others can add to the increased likelihood of an incident.
Thus its helpful if the parents treat the situation as the natural event it is, and not add additional stress to the child. Punishment and teasing by siblings and other family members can add to the stress of the child, and inadvertently make the situation worse. More importantly, it can begin a process of self doubt and the creation of a negative self image and lack of personal confidence.
There are studies that show that some children affected by nocturnal enuresis develop behavior problems as a result of the stress and low self esteem. If the child is older and in school these problems can have a negative affect on their ability to pay attention in class and relate well with other children.
A child with bed wetting tendencies may consider this a big time problem. The best course of action for the parents is to downplay the situation, not to elevate it to a nightly crises of being a "Good" or "Bad" person. Of earning or losing the parents love and respect.

The relevant fact to keep in mind is that the child is not doing the bed wetting on purpose to aggravate you. Their bodies are still growing and their nervous system is still developing, and this process just takes longer in some children than in others.
