Checklist To Remember In Order To Shop Safely Online

Millions of consumers are turning to the internet for shopping especially around busy present buying periods

. Traipsing up and down the high street can be an exhausting process. In comparison, online shopping can be done at the click of a button; making it a far less stressful task. However, many consumers are still afraid of shopping online as they do not fully understand or trust the internet.

Naturally, as with everything, there are unscrupulous businesses and salesmen trying to rob you of your hard-earned cash through scams. However, there are certain ways of guaranteeing that you dont get stung and only use approved websites and companies. Here is a quick checklist to ensure that you shop safely and protect yourself when buying online:

Are they from the UK?

It is important to check if the website has a company number and that there is a registered company address. Even though some websites may have a .co.uk address they may not be based in the UK. This can cause issues as you are not protected by UK buying law if you are tricked into purchasing items from abroad.

Is it a secure website?

Firstly, you are not walking through the doors of a reputable high street retailer, so always be sure to check out the website that you are buying from. Most consumers fail to consider this before buying online. There are vetting websites that list online retailers rating them for range of goods, security and standard of service for the consumers benefit.

Exercise common sense

The internet offers the best value for money available, but no matter what they are selling they have to make a realistic profit to be a sustainable business. Be honest with yourself and if a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is. Looking at a reputable business, like Amazon, will give you a good idea what a product should cost.

Be aware of fake sites

Occasionally, a computer can be infected by a virus that can corrupt your internet browser to direct you to fake websites even if you enter the real address. This scam, known as pharming is rare, but make sure to check the address once you have landed on the homepage. Poor spelling and grammar can also indicate if a website is faked.

Paying securely

This is where many consumers start to worry about entering their card details online. There is no need to worry if you check that the payment page is secured; normally signified by a padlock on the tab of your browser. Also, check that the website URL starts with http as this identifies it as a legitimate website.
