Chardham (Four Sacred Places)

Uttarakhand is known as "abode of the gods" or Devbhumi, belong some of the holiest Hindu shrines and for more than a thousand years, pilgrims have been visiting the region in the hopes of salvation and purification from sin. According to Hindu mythologies Char dham signifies the journey to the moksha and a divine life after that. The word "Char Dham" refers to the four abodes of God, namely Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri at the Himalayan region of Garhwal (Uttrakhand). Gangotri and Yamunotri, the sources of both the Ganges and Yamuna represent goddess of Shakti. Kedarnath represent lord Shiva and Badrinath represents Lord Vaishnava. Therefore, devotees visit these places in the same chronological order. Today, this Himalayan region is visited by thousands of Hindu devotees, who travel from every corner of the world during the annual pilgrim season. This season begins from the month of April and lasts until the celebration of the festival of lights; Diwali held in the month of October/November.

Yamunotri Dham- Yamunotri is one of the four sites in India's Char Dham pilgrimage. It is the source of Yamuna river and the seat of the goddess Yamuna. This temple is situated in the western region of Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 3,235 metres (10,614 ft) in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. The temple was constructed by Maharaj Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. This sacred shrine is the western most shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas and situated opposite to Gangotri. Near the temple are three hot springs. The most important, Surya Kund, is a tank full of boiling water into which rice and potatoes are dipped to be cooked and taken as "prasad". Near the Kund, a rock slab, the "Divya Shila" is worshipped before puja is offered to the black marble idol of Yamuna.

Gangotri Dham- Gangotri is the origin of the river Ganga and seat of the goddess Ganga, The river is called Bhagirathi at the source and acquires the name Ganga from Devprayag onwards where it meets the Alaknanda. This holy temple situated at 99 km from Uttrarkashi, at height of 3140 meters. A shrine dedicated to the Goddess was built some 250 years ago by Amar Bahadur Thapa, the Gorkha Commander. According to an old legend, Lord Shiva rewarded King Bhagirath after his penance and Ganga came down to earth. Before performing the Puja rituals, a holy dip in the Ganga flowing nearby the temple is a must. Gangotri glaciers, the original source of the sacred river Ganges, attract tourists in large numbers every season.

Kedarnath Dham- Kedarnath is another holiest pilgrimage for the devout Hindu, located in the Uttaranchal state of India. Kedarnath is a majestic sight, standing in the middle of a wide plateau surrounded by lofty snow covered peaks. Kedarnath is one of the twelve 'Jyotirlingas' of lord Shiva. This temple is near the Mandakini River believed to have been built by Adi Sankaracharya. Outside the temple door a large statue of the Nandi Bull stands as guard. The temple is open only between the ends of April to start of November.

Badrinath Dham-Badrinath is the seat of the god Vishnu, most important of the four sites in India's Char Dham pilgrimage. Badrinath temple is situated in Chamoli district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. Badrinath was established as a major pilgrimage site by Adi Shankara in the ninth century. According to legend Shankara discovered a black stone image of Lord Badrinarayan made of Saligram stone in the Alaknanda River. In the 17th century, the temple was expanded by the kings of Garhwal. After significant damage it was rebuilt by the King of Jaipur. Lord Badri Narayan is armed with Shankh and Chakra in two arms in a lifted posture and two arms rested on the lap in Yogamudra. The

temple also houses Garuda (Vahana - vehicle of Lord Narayan) and Goddess Mahalaxmi.
