There may be many diabetics out there who are not aware of a condition to which they are particularly prone. It is called "Cellulitis". Cellulitis is a skin infection that spreads and usually begins as a small area that swells, it becomes tender and is red in color. Generally, people may develop a fever and sometimes this is accompanied by chills and sweating. In addition, the lymph glands near the affected area can become swollen. Cellulitis is an infection of the deep layers of the skin. Although there are other bacteria that can cause Cellulitis, the primary villain is "staph".

An interesting thing about Cellulitis is that how it begins is unclear. There are cases where it begins near an area of trauma, where the skin has broken open and other cases where the skin has not been broken open. In the end, no one knows where the infection came from. Diabetics or people who have an immune disorder are particularly susceptible to Celluitis.

For those with who are trying to diagnose this problem on your own, take caution, there are similar symptoms among a few conditions. People with poor leg circulation often have a scaly redness on the shins and ankles, which is "stasis dermatitis". However, this can easily confused with Cellulitis, which begins with warmth, swelling, pain, inflammation and redness. Although the most common cause of Cellulitis is "staph", another cause can be "strep". Cellulitis caused by strep is called erysipelas and the hot, bright red circumscribed skin with a raised border can, in severe cases, destroy tissue very quickly. There are many other types of bacteria that can cause Cellulitis as well, such as "H" flu in children, a dog or cat bite, an injury from a saltwater fish or shellfish or an injury on a farm, especially if it occurred while working with pigs or poultry.

What anyone with diabetes should know is, in treating Cellulitis, the first thing to determine is if the skin inflammation is due to an infection. Beyond that, a medical history, physical exam, white blood cell count and a culture for bacteria are of value. If it is difficult or impossible to make a determination, many doctors will treat with antibiotic to be on the safe side. In the event this treatment is ineffective, treatment may be made with a corticosteroid if the inflammation is thought to be from an autoimmune disorder. Antibiotics such as penicillin or a derivative are effective against Celluitis. If some other bacteria are determined to be the cause as the result of a culture or if the patient is allergic to penicillin, then other appropriate antibiotics can be substituted.
