Celebrities Get Their Tweet On

The social networking site known as Twitter is one that has been growing exponentially for months and months now - years, even - as more and more celebrities and their fans rush to join the Twittersphere in the hopes of connecting with the world.

It's undeniable than one of the key draws of Twitter for many people is the chance to 'follow' their favourite celebrities, receiving updates posted by the stars which have the knack of making it feel almost as if you are being spoken to directly by your idols. While this isn't quite the way the website works, it hasn't stopped millions of people signing up in order to find out what their celebrity icons had for breakfast, what their dogs are doing and what country they're jetting off to next.

From the point of view of the celebrity, Twitter has multiple purposes. From a marketing point of view, the social network affords stars the opportunity to do exactly what it says on the tin: network. The nature of Twitter that allows fans to 'follow' celebrities means that celebs have an easy way of talking to their fans, giving them updates on this and that, what they're doing, their thoughts and feelings and, of course, the odd shout out to a few lucky individuals. Why is this a good thing? Well, it works in much the same way as a meet and greet does - by allowing the fans to, in a way, interact with the celebrity, the celebrity can then give a little back to the fan and ensure as best as they can that their admirer continues to support them in their future ventures. It's just good marketing sense.Celebrities Get Their Tweet On

For some celebrities, however, Twitter has a far greater use. It helps them spread the word of upcoming projects and shows that need support in order to become realities. This is especially true in the cases of some musicians who have gained celebrity to an extent that they are world famous but not to the level of having an enormous amount of cash. Two examples are talented musicians Imogen Heap and Amanda Palmer. Both of these women can be called 'famous', but both have also relied heavily and continue to do so on Twitter to ensure that their shows remain well attended, their albums get talked about and, in the case of Amanda Palmer, she has a free bed for the night so she can avoid paying for the hotel every night of a busy tour.

If you've not yet signed up to Twitter, you might want to fire up your broadband connection and try it out. Not only will you get the entertainment of harmless celebrity stalking, but you could even find yourself with the power to help some of your favourite stars out - which is truly one of the best gifts a fan can give.
