Caravanning the East Coast of Australia

Caravan holidays can be a great deal of fun since they allow you to set your own itinerary and let you to choose just how much time you want to spend at each destination. Thus, if you are not able to see all of one destination in one day, you can simply camp out for another. One of the most popular caravan routes in Australia is the one that heads along the coast of the country from Adelaide to Cairns, because it is packed with plenty to do and easy driving, which makes for a very enjoyable caravan holiday.

Adelaide is a great starting point, given it is known as one of the best locations for gourmet food and fresh fish. In fact, it sports many local towns to stop in and visit that actually provide all of the fresh fish to Sydney, which means you cannot get better fish than in these small villages. The Great Ocean Road is a favoured route among those in caravans while travelling down the coast since it allows you to meander along the coast, stopping in at the local towns while you travel.

While heading out of Adelaide towards Cairns make it a point to stop by at Philips Island, because here you can see small penguins in the wild, which is something that is unique to an area that is not in the arctic. From here you can watch the penguin's coast along waves and paddle towards their little homes in the burrows on the beach. You will also want to stop by at Wilsons Promontory, which is also off of the Great Ocean Road, for a great panoramic look out into the ocean and some great food choices.Caravanning the East Coast of Australia

As you head north you will likely find many more islands and coastal towns that you can visit at your leisure. Between Brisbane and Cairns, Fraser Island deserves a stop since it is the largest sand island on the globe and you can explore it on a 4x4 tour that moves at your speed. If you get a chance make sure to visit the Whitsundays as well and hire a boat. This is because the region offers some unforgettable views that are well worth a dinner cruise if you have the time.

Once you get into Cairns you will be glad that you took the scenic route due to the amount of tropical rainforest pockets and national forests that you pass. Plus, as a reward for your journey, you can see the Great Barrier Reef while in Cairns, which is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and worth the price of boat hire to get reasonably close to one of the most renowned natural creations in the world. Make sure to spend a night out at a great restaurant while in Cairns as well, because although the area does not have the same reputation as Adelaide, there are many menus that are worth the few extra dollars.
