Caravanning from Melbourne to Alice Springs

To start off you have a few choices of what route you want to take. A great path, if you do not have any set destinations that you want to see, is to travel through the Grampians towards the Barossa Valley and then out again through Coober Pedy and Ayres Rock to get to Alice Springs. This will allow you to see some of the best attractions of the area, although you will miss out on the Flinders Ranges or travelling on the historical and well-known Ocean Road.

To start you will want to hit the Western Highway and start inching towards the Barossa Valley. You may want to plan a night near the Grampians in the National Park, given the many waterfalls and cliff views to take in, but you should at least plan on stopping by to see the sites - and plenty of cockatoos and kangaroos to boot.

From here you will want to hit the major highway again (although you can always jump off to see some of the small rural and country villages that line the way, if you need to stretch your legs). After some distance on the road you will pass into South Australia, where you should do your grocery shopping since you have to toss your vegetables and fruit before passing through anyhow. Make sure to stop by Pink Lake for some great photos squeezed in between Tailem Bend and Strathalbyn. Tarunda is a great stopping place for the night, which is a small village town that could be straight off of a postcard.

Next you will want to head towards Woomera and travel the rolling countryside landscape, as you head south parallel to the Spencer Gulf. Port Augusta is the last real stop in a commercialised area and then you head into terrain that is a bit rougher - although a lot more fun for sightseeing. Continue travelling towards Coober Pedy where you will find accommodation and plenty of displays of old missiles and other military items.

Coober Pedy itself is best known due to the Mad Max films, and you will see that in this mining town a great deal of people live under the ground to get away from the heat, which gives it a true outback feeling. You will start to notice a lot more lizards and such as you continue to head towards Alice Springs. Keep an eye out for a Camel farm as you get closer to the Springs, and stop in for free rides and a unique change - and before long you will have arrived and be able to see the MacDonnell Ranges that signify the end of your journey.
