Caravan Holidays In South Wales - A Great Getaway

Caravan Holidays In South Wales - A Great Getaway

Wales is famed as the land of song, and South Wales in particular is known for it's valleys and it's coal mines

. But, there is a lot more to South Wales as many tourists are beginning to discover. It's capital Cardiff, gets the most visitors, as it has several tourist attractions and it is also now one of Britain's top shopping destinations. But in our opinion, South Wales' greatest attraction is its long unspoilt coastline. It has some of the best beaches in the UK, many of them have campsites, and caravan holiday parks.

Heading west from Cardiff, Porthcawl with it's Trecco Beach Holiday Park is the first major beach stop, and from there on, the coastline is a mix of picturesque coves and long sandy beaches. Before even getting to Porthcawl though, you can take a couple of back roads to stop off for a stroll among the sand dunes at Merthyr Mawr - Europe's largest sand dunes. Take a bottle of water and a snack as it's quite a trek up and down the dunes if you intend making it all the way to the beach. With it's very own ecosystem, it is a haven for indigenous animal and plant life.

Further down the road, the Gower has been a bit of a hidden gem for a while, but slowly word is getting out, and it is becoming a popular weekend break for Londoners taking advantage of the relatively short jaunt down the M4. With Brighton just around the corner, you might ask why they bother, but the beauty and tranquility of the peninsular it is well worth the extra drive. The area has plenty of caravan and camping parks, and if you enjoy a bit of fishing then Port Einon in particular has great fishing opportunities at low tide. The dawn walk out to the rocks will take you across a stunning otherworldly landscape before you feel the spray of the surf crashing on the rocks. If you do take this walk make sure that you are aware of the tides to ensure your safety - ask one of the friendly locals.

Heading further west, in the counties of Camarthenshire and Pembrokshire the scenery gets even better. Just a few miles west of Tenby is Lydstep Beach which has a caravan park, and is ideally situated for exploring the area. Just a few miles away is Freshwater West which has some of the clearest and bluest waters in Wales, and is host to regular surfing competitions. Many parts of the area are subject to preservation orders, which means their olde worlde charm is retained - check out Manorbier, it's Castle and beach, you won't be disappointed. If you do get bored of endless sand dunes, then you can always head off to one of the metropolitan centers, or one of the many attractions in the South Wales area - nothing is too far away. As seaside towns go, it doesn't get much better than Tenby which is custom made for tourists, and people popping in form nearby caravan sites to stock up on supplies. The town itself is very picturesque being built on the site of an old castle. it has a harbor, a beach, and some of the best fish and chips in Wales.

Closer to Cardiff there is the St Fagans Museum (Outdoor) of Welsh Life which is a great day out for all the family. Entry is free, and a whole day can be spent exploring the exhibits, stately home, and just take a relaxed stroll through history. For the children there are many more attractions including Oakwood theme park, and Techniquest, which is an educational science centre in Cardiff which has lots for the children to do.

Finding a place to stay in South Wales is not usually difficult although obviously it is wise to do your research and book in advance. Deciding where to stay depends on what kind of break you are looking for. If you fancy a driving free break, then you may choose one of the Caravan Holiday Parks that have enough to do on site and within the local area. You may choose to use your holiday park as a base, in which case Lydstep Beach Park is one of the best located parks for exploring the majority of the south west coastline. Wherever you stay, you are sure to find yourself wondering why you hadn't been to South Wales before.
