Car Insurance For Teens: How To Keep Premiums Low

Purchasing car insurance for teens can be quite expensive

. Most companies will charge you twice as much to add a teen to your policy, but this is necessary for the very young driver. Teens who are under 18 years of age cannot take out their own policy anyway, so they have to be under someone else's coverage. Once they turn 18, it will be cheaper for them to still be listed on their parents policy.

Teenage boys are more costly to insure than girls, since they are considered more of a risk. One way that most parents are able to ease a bit of the cost behind insuring a teenage driver is by enrolling their child in a Driver's Education course. Most high schools offer this to students who are at least 15 years old and it is an excellent class to get young drivers prepared for being on the road.

After the course is completed, a certificate is presented to the student which can then be shown to the insurance company for a discounted premium. As long as the teen doesn't have any accidents, speeding tickets, or other traffic violations, there shouldn't be any reason for the monthly premium to be raised at all. Keeping a clean driving record will prevent the monthly premium from being boosted even higher.

Driver's Education courses aren't the only sources for parents to get discounts on their teen driver's insurance policy. Discounts are also given to students with good grades and even for safety features found on most new cars. Even thought most parents don't want to shell out a bunch of money for a brand new car, it can be a very cost effective move.

New cars are often equipped with safety features that insurance companies are glad to see in place. They are so happy to see these special features that they offer discounts for any that are on their policy holder's vehicle.

Options that are discountable include automatic seatbelts, anti-theft devices, anti-lock brakes, and air bags. Most new automobiles have more than one of these features already installed.

While parents are often hesitant to add their teenager to a current policy, many feel that it is a necessary move to make. Car insurance for teens will most likely always be a high priced investment. A comforting fact is that eventually the premium amount will go down, even though this will actually take quite a few years.
