The Cape Peninsula is home to an amazing range of diverse flora and fauna and is
part of the Cape Floral Kingdom which has been recognized as a world heritage site. Many parts of the Cape Peninsula are largely untouched and unspoiled. Fynbos, that rare plant vegetation, occurs in many varieties on the Cape Peninsula.The Peninsula is the meeting place of two currents from different oceans namely; the cold Benguela current from the Atlantic Ocean and the warm Mozambiquan current from the Indian Ocean. The meeting of these two oceans in this manner is quite unique. On a clear day at the visitor centre on the tip of the peninsula visitors can actually see the two currents meeting.
From Cape Town, visitors drive through the leafy southern suburbs towards the southern coast along False Bay. This bay is the site of countless stretches of beautiful beaches and sun-bathing areas where tourists can stop and bathe in the warm Indian Ocean. If visitors prefer, they may also take a comfortable train ride which hugs the coastline up to Simonstown.
The route carries on passed many little suburbs or villages along the coast to Simonstown. This is the home of the South African Navy. It was established as a British naval base in World War II. There are parts of the town that look as though they are frozen in time because the buildings have kept their very colonial facades. This adds a lot of character to the town. It is also where the train line ends.
Just down the coast from Simonstown is Muizenberg, a favourite hang out for surfers. With its friendly waves and long sandy beaches, Muizenberg is a perfect destination for the whole family. Close by the beach is a water slide and mini golf course for the more adventurous.
The Cape Peninsula has many shipwrecks along its sometimes dangerous coastline. Even today modern ships round the Cape with caution knowing that a sudden storm could dash them against the reefs that lie in wait if they pass too close. A drive around the coast will show the folly of many a ship's captain.
The Cape Peninsula is also the home of two great sporting events; the Cape Argus Tour and the Two Oceans Marathon. Both events attract thousands of visitors as they unfold against a backdrop of stunning mountain and ocean views. Many participants make the journey back to Cape Town year after year, having been captivated by the beauty of the city and its surrounds.
