Canary Islands 'are a tourist hotspot'

Canary Islands 'are a tourist hotspot'

The Canary Islands are popular among tourists

, new figures have illustrated.

According to statistics from the area's Ministry for the Environment, the number of foreign visitors - including those staying in Paradors - averages more than 18,000 per kilometre of coast, the Euro Weekly News reports.

And Spanish hotels elsewhere may also be doing brisk business, with the data showing the area of Andalucia in the south of the mainland was also above the national average in terms of holidaymakers.

Whereas across Spain as a whole, the typical number of people on vacation for every kilometre of coast is 5,759, this rises to 9,863 in Andalucia.

This is perhaps not surprising, as people flock to Paradors and other forms of accommodation in the region thanks to its beaches and warm climate.

Its capital and largest city is Seville, which is a popular destination for Britons seeking Spanish hotels.

The Ministry for the Environment also revealed that the region of Valencia was a hit among those keen to take vacations in Spain, with a total of 6,329 visitors for each kilometre of coastline.

All the aforementioned destinations were found to be more popular places for those heading to Spanish hotels than places such as Galicia and Asturias, which each registered an average of fewer than 550.

The figures were based on analysis of data taken between 2004 and 2009. The purpose of gathering the statistics was to register the evolution of tourism on the coasts of Spain.

Areas close to the sea are often popular among those taking vacations as they can provide a contrast to urban and inland regions and they enable people to relax and enjoy the waters.

Although travel disruption caused by such things as the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland and industrial action taken by UK aircrews have impacted on tourists leaving the country, this has not served to deter many from making the trip to warmer climes.
