Can an Online French Course Work?

There are plenty of places that promise that you can learn French online. In reality, the vast majority of the sites are electronic versions of the phrase books that people used to use. They may actually be a bit less practical than a phrasebook, as phrasebooks are much easier to carry around than a computer. This type of language learning suffers the same limitations as does a phrase book, as well. Mainly, learning French from the written language doesn't address the problem that non French speakers are most often completely illiterate in French.

There are online French courses that use different methods. One of the most effective methods is learning by listening. Oftentimes, these French language programs will actually discourage you from trying to speak too soon. Speaking right away is the best way to develop truly awful habits. Ironically, this actually demonstrates why classes that concentrate on hearing French tend to work much better. When you hear a word pronounced incorrectly over and over again, it tends to stick. This is why so many English speakers use nonsense words such as "irregardless" instead of "regardless" and "unthaw" instead of "thaw": They heard it over and over again and it stuck.

Learning French by hearing songs and stories is a great way to make the correct pronunciations stick. Songs have a way of working themselves into our heads and, because the lyrics have a context, they're much easier to remember. This method is used by good language teachers and has been for many years. The methods that concentrate entirely on writing and reciting words tend to be heavy on memorization and rote tasks, which isn't nearly as effective as fostering memorization by attaching words to music.

Melodies help to give a mental queue to words when recall doesn't come easily. This can also be accomplished by learning the words in the context of stories. Online French classes that take advantage of this teaching style tend to be much more effective than do those that just rely on written words and recitation. In fact, the latter type of learning can be done by simply auto-translating a page from French and then back again. Learning by hearing and experiencing, however, is generally more effective and actually ends up taking less time to get the same benefits. It doesn't hurt that it's usually a lot more fun, as well.
