The leach field is where much of the real work of a septic system takes place. Once the wastewater has moved out of the storage tank it passes through pipes into the leach field area. Through a series of ports the water enters the field and gradually travels through the layers of material under the pipes and down into the ground itself.
During this process the water is cleaned of impurities and any remaining contaminants. This is why it is so important that the soil be evaluated regarding the pace at which water moves through.
The Final Touches
Once everything is in place a final inspection is required and then the crew can carefully backfill the open areas of the system. With the various pits and holes filled, the homeowner can consider planting sod or grass seed.
The areas under which the components lie should not be disturbed. There will be some settling over the first few months as the ground compacts naturally.
