Legend states that King Arthur came to blows with Huail, a local chief over one of the Kings mistresses, resulting in King Arthur becoming wounded in the knee. The pair agreed to be civil so long as the incident was not mentioned again. However when King Arthur disguised himself for a romantic liaison with another mistress at Ruthin his old adversary, Huail, recognized and ridiculed him. King Arthur was outraged and immediately had Huail executed on a stone block which is now displayed in Ruthin Town Square.

The first known resident of Ruthin Castle, Dafydd ap Gruffudd was awarded the castle for his treacherous support of invading King Edward I. In a sinister twist of fate, Dafydd ap Gruffyd was himself executed for High Treason less than a year after becoming Prince of Wales and the last independent ruler of Wales. In brutal custom he was hung, drawn and quartered and his head spiked atop the Tower of London' as a warning to others!
