Buying Your First Pair of Boots

It can be exciting buying your first pair of walking boots but it's important not to lose focus and get carried away on the latest high-spec styles. The most crucial thing is to ensure you end up with a boot that meets all the criteria below:

* Does the boot fit well?

* Is it comfortable?

* Will it be suitable for the conditions and terrains of your adventures?

* What are you looking for most in the boots? For them to be sturdy and supportive? For them to be crampon-compatible? For them to be lightweight and waterproof?

Consider all these things prior to your store visit or looking online so you can be confident in your choice on the day.

Making a decision:

You may be overwhelmed by the amount of shoes, boots, and varying styles and brands available, but just remember the points we mentioned above and you're guaranteed to make a well-informed choice.

* Try a few pairs on and remember that your feet may swell when they get hot

* Try the shoes/boots on with walking socks - preferably thick ones to simulate how they'll feel out on the trails

* Try both shoes on since you may have one foot slightly bigger or smaller than the other

* If the store doesn't have your preferred style or the size you need, check online!

Once you get them home:

Don't even dream of leaving them in the box until the morning of your expedition.

* Get them out, lace them up and walk around the house so your feet get used to them.

* Climbing the staircase is also good for simulating how they'll perform on hills.

You may experience a mild discomfort with the boots to begin with since walking boots are, by nature, a lot stiffer than regular footwear. Your feet will adjust to this in time but if they don't perhaps take them back and switch to a more flexible version.

You can also enhance the fit of the shoes by lacing them differently. By re-threading and exploring different methods of lacing, you'll find your own preference.
