, as many people do, there is no doubt that you will want to purchase a chess set of your own. For many people, however, this becomes a decision that is far more than going out to their local store and picking up a $10 set off of the shelf. Although you certainly can play with one of those boards and pieces, you are going to be missing something at one point or another. That is why many people put a lot of thought into the set that they purchase, and here are some things for you to consider when doing so.
The first thing that I would like to get out of the way is the fact that although there are some standards as far as chessboards are concerned, there is also a lot of room for personal interpretation. You need to be comfortable with the board that you use, regardless of what the professionals have to say about your selection. Of course, you also need to consider the other individuals that are going to be playing a game with you, as you would not want to make it uncomfortable for them while they are playing the game. Here are some of the specific standards that you will want to keep in mind so that you can choose a board that is right for you and everybody else that may be playing.
Keep in mind, there are many different sizes of boards that are available, and regardless of whether you choose one that is large or small, you would want to make sure that you have one that is proportionate to the pieces that you choose. A guideline that is used by many individuals is to try to fit four pawns in the space of a single square. If you're able to do that, you know that you are close, as far as the sizing is concerned. From that point, you can really choose any size board that you want, provided it is proportionately chosen. This is important for you to consider when you buy chessboard pieces, because you would not want them swallowed up by the squares, and at the same time, you would not want them to overwhelm the spaces that are available.
Another thing that you should consider is the type of material that is used to make the chess set. Some people are perfectly happy playing on a board that is made out of cardboard, and that certainly is fine if you are going to be traveling or taking the board with you to play at a centralized location. If you're going to be keeping the board at your home, however, you may want to consider buying a wooden chess set or perhaps one that is made out of stone. These feel more substantial, and it certainly does add something to the game when you are able to play on one of those upgraded boards. Just make sure that you look at the options that are available to you and then choose accordingly.
