Dom Pierre Prignon was a Benedictine monk in about 1638 to 14 September 1715 in the Champagne region of France. At the Abbey of Hautvillers, a major proponent of the misconceptions surrounding Dom Prignon came from one of his successors, Dom Groussard, who in 1821 gave an account of Dom Prignon "inventing" Champagne among other exaggerated tales about the Abbey to garner prestige for the church and historical importance.
The myths about Prignon being the first to use corks and being able to name the precise vineyard by tasting a single grape originated from Groussard's account.
Contrary to popular belief, Dom did not introduce blending to Champagne wines but rather the innovation of blending the grapes before sending them to press.
